Getting a pet is an exciting time in anyone’s life and most people pick out a young animal to bring home so that they can share a long lifetime together. This is all well and good, but you really do need to do some homework before you bring that new puppy home.
You are going to have to think about all the aspects of your growing puppy’s life. You then need to make sure that all his needs are met in order to help ensure a long, healthy and happy life.
Meeting doggy needs
As you would baby proof your home for the arrival of an infant or toddler, so too do you need to puppy proof your home so that your new addition will be safe. Of course you want to protect your belongings too, so you need to ensure that you look at your home from puppy level to see any possible risks.
You need to make sure that there is nothing dangerous to chew on because most puppies can chew inappropriate items when they go through teething from about 6 months in age. Look for electrical cords that are in an ideal chew position, anything that has been sucked in under furniture and forgotten about and think carefully about any and all stairs in your home.
Look around for sharp objects, broken household items and other things that could injure your puppy. You may even want to get baby locks for cupboards so that your puppy can’t go snooping around in them and baby gates for the doors of any rooms that you want to keep your pup in or out of.
The next thing you need to do is consult a vet about the perfect puppy diet for your newest family member. Puppies need a balanced and nutritional diet to grow up healthy and without a hitch.
