What are
environmental allergies?

Allergy not caused by fleas or food is often coming from environment. The common causes of environmental allergy in dogs include pollen, mould spores and dust mites. These allergens are airborne and may appear year-round, aside from pollen, which is more common in springtime. The dog’s skin is a crucial barrier to allergens, making skin care a priority.

How do I know if my dog has
an environmental allergy?

Allergies usually appear between the ages of 3 months and 6 years. Inflammation might appear at different parts of dog's body such as eyes, ears, paws, base of tail etc. If you catch your dog chewing or licking these areas too much, take him to the vet for an examination.

How can I help my dog?

Environmental allergies are most often chronic, which means they demand lifelong management. Bathing with anti-itch shampoos can help soothe a skin. Changing his food to one that is formulated to support the skin function in the cases of dermatosis can help.

What are the causes
of unhealthy skin?

  • Food Sensitivities

Can occur as a result of a reaction to certain kinds of proteins in your dog’s food.

  • Environmental Allergens

Your dog may be effected by his surroundings by items such as pollen, mould, etc. These are called “environmental” allergens, many of which are things a dog breathes in, called “inhaled” allergies. Some materials such as plastics can cause “contact” allergies.

  • Parasites & Fleas

Fleas, lice and mites can all cause skin irritation. Bites from parasites are irritating, causing dogs to bite and scratch themselves, damaging their skin. Some dogs are particularly sensitive, or “hypersensitive” in medical terms, and even a single fleabite can then cause a lot of discomfort!

  • Infection

Bacterial and fungal infections can cause skin problems.

Ways to support skin health

  • Medication can help address skin infections or severe itching
  • Nutrition can support to quickly calm sensitive skin. It can also get to the root of the problem by helping identify the cause (such as a food sensitivity). Food with plenty of essential fatty acids also supports healthy skin and a shiny coat.
  • Supplements can help your dog get some of the fatty acids or other nutrients he needs to help him heal
  • Your vet may recommend a combination of all three
