Created specifically to help adult 7+ pets fight the signs of ageing.

Pets age much faster
than people

Dogs and cats age differently than people, and major health changes can occur much earlier in their lives. Some pets can be considered "middle aged" at 7 (or 5 in the case of large breed dogs). Pets generally reach “retirement age” at 11, and often develop many of the same age-related issues seen in older people.

Use this slider to find your pet’s “real” age.

AGE 1: Your pet is the equivalent of a human teenager

AGE 2-6: For every calendar year, your pet ages about 4 human years

AGE 7+: Age-related changes in your pet’s behavior may become more noticeable

Your cat is in human years

Your dog is in human years

Large and especially giant breed dogs age much faster than smaller dogs. This means their nutritional needs change earlier: at around age 5. Changing foods at age 5 will help cater for their changing needs as they age.

Ageing happens
from the inside out

At Hill’s, we’ve been studying how nutrition impacts pets’ cell function for over a decade. We learned the ageing process is complex, slowing pets down both mentally and physically.

Pets' cell functions change from
around 7 years of age

Each column (vertical line) in the following maps represents a different pet, and each row (horizontal line) represents a specific cell function. These maps give us an overview of how cell functions change in pets as they age over time.

2-6 years
7-10 years
11-14 years
2-6 years
7-14 years
  • Specific cell function turned down (lower activity)
  • Specific cell function turned up (higher activity)

Compared to younger dogs and cats, older pets have different cell functions. For example, the ability to build muscle mass is higher in younger pets than in older pets. Inflammatory processes on the other hand are higher in older pets than in younger pets, and this may impact cognitive brain functions.

Through our research we were able to identify these changes and develop Youthful Vitality.
